Compounding for and Marketing to Hospice and Palliative Care Patients

One of the most emotionally satisfying aspects of compounding is the end of life comfort that we as compounders can afford to dying patients. Compounding for palliative care is similar because we provide comfort care for patients, many of whom have been in pain for years. We have a tremendous arsenal of compounded products that we can offer these patients including mouth care, skin care, wound care, and pain relief. We can assist the hospice nurses and physicians in converting a patient from one opioid to another, equianalgesic dosing. We can offer in-services to hospices, we can train their nurses in equianalgesic dosing, and we can make presentations on behalf of hospice to targeted groups including referring physicians. We can attend hospice multidisciplinary team meetings and offer assistance on drug regimens and in particular on compounded solutions for patients who have not responded to commercially available drug regimens.
